Bernaung House, designed by RAD+ar (Research Artistic Design + architecture) and completed in 2022, is a private residence located in Tangerang, Indonesia. The name "Bernaung" translates to "sheltering," reflecting the home's core concept of providing comfort and sustainability within a tropical environment. The design aims to achieve thermal comfort with minimal energy use, embodying the essence of tropical living.
Architectural Design and Features
The house is situated on a 400 m² plot and features a single-story layout with a mezzanine. A prominent feature is the expansive gable roof that hovers above the living spaces, creating a sense of openness while providing shelter. The roof's internal ceiling is clad with monochrome timber, serving as a canvas for natural shadow play during the day and framing lighting elements at night.
Central to the design is an atrium that functions as both a visual focal point and a wind chimney, facilitating cross and stacked natural ventilation. The building is oriented along a north-south axis to optimize natural light while minimizing heat exposure.Strategic subtractions in the roof's center allow for skylights and ventilation, aiding in the release of hot air and enhancing the indoor microclimate.
The layout stretches diagonally across the site, visually connecting gardens on all sides and framing views of the sky at both ends of the building. This arrangement creates the illusion of a more spacious garden house within the dense urban context of Tangerang.Layers of diagonal walls and micro-gardens are integrated to optimize passive design strategies, leveraging air openings, pressure differentials, and light variations throughout the day.
Bernaung House exemplifies RAD+ar's commitment to innovative, context-sensitive design that harmonizes with its tropical surroundings.
