Micro Tropicality serves as the Jakarta headquarters of RAD+ar (Research Artistic Design + architecture), completed in 2020.This project reimagines tropical architecture by integrating vernacular principles with contemporary design, creating a workspace that responds to the local climate and promotes sustainability. The building features a multi-layered façade designed to reduce solar radiation, direct breezes indoors, and shade windows, thereby cooling the interior spaces.A prominent pitched roof not only channels rainwater efficiently but also collects it for irrigation, exemplifying a commitment to environmental stewardship. The use of vertical openings within the 18-meter-deep plan allows for ample natural light, minimizing the need for artificial lighting during the day.
Internally, the design incorporates dense foliage and greenery, fostering a microclimate that enhances air quality and provides a tranquil atmosphere. The strategic orientation of the building, with thoughtful placement of openings on the east and west façades, facilitates temperature regulation and natural ventilation. This approach not only improves occupant comfort but also reduces energy consumption.
By blending traditional tropical design elements with modern sustainable practices, Micro Tropicality stands as a testament to RAD+ar's innovative approach to architecture. It demonstrates how thoughtful design can create harmonious spaces that are both functional and environmentally conscious.
